Soup Bowl Cozy Safety
By Cindy Shuster
While celebrating Christmas, some family members received the ever-popular microwave Soup Bowl Cozies and Baked Potato Bags. However, the question arose . . . how safe are they? One family member replied, “I’ve heard of people saying they have caught on fire in their microwave.” Along with the help of written instructions from the Pellon Company, I will attempt to address this question.
Soup Bowl Cozies have become very popular for sewers selling at craft show or for gift-giving over the past several years. Cozies are quick and easy to sew; however, one needs to heed the caution warnings provided by the various companies providing batting and patterns. When sewing these items, there are a few requirements for safety according to the Pellon Company, the makers of “Wrap ‘N Zap™”:
- When working with products intended for use in the microwave, certain precautions should be taken. Use only 100% cotton batting (do not use batting that contains scrim), thread and fabric.
- Wrap ‘N Zap™, a product of the Pellon Company, is made of 100% Cotton fibers without any additives. Do not use this product in the microwave without food. It is NOT fire retardant or flame proof. For this reason, the Pellon Company suggests cooking for 1-minute intervals for a maximum of 8 minutes.
- Never leave the microwave unattended. Do not use in a Convection/Microwave oven.
Whether you are selling at craft shows or giving as gifts to family and friends, don’t forget get to include a “How to Use” warning label to prevent unwanted hazards. There are several examples available online; just be sure they have the correct safety information.

Here’s one of my favorite soup recipes for you to enjoy!
Broccoli Cheese Soup
(Makes 4 Cups)
- 2 Tablespoons butter or margarine
- 1 small onion chopped
- 2 cups milk
- 1 chicken bouillon cube
- 1 10 oz. pkg. frozen broccoli or 1 ½ c. fresh broccoli (cook until tender)
- 1 cup shredded American or Cheddar Cheese (about 4 oz.)
- Pepper to taste
Melt margarine on low heat. Fry onion until soft but not brown. Add flour and stir until completely mixed with butter. Gradually pour in milk and stir until smooth. Add bouillon, pepper, and broccoli. Stir often and heat over low heat until heated throughout. Add cheese and stir constantly until it melts. Do not boil.
Super informative! Thank you for the information, Cindy!
