For these topics and many more, plan to attend the 50th annual Sewing Smorgasbord on Saturday March 15th to be held at Sheridan Middle School in Thornville, Ohio, (Perry County). This is the textiles and clothing update of the year sponsored by the Perry County Homemakers Organization and Ohio State University Extension. This year’s program includes over 30 classes on a variety of topics, over 15 exhibits by area businesses, a fabric fair, scissor sharpening, a Sewing Machine Raffle, and two Fat Quarter Raffles.
In honor and recognition of our 50th anniversary of the Sewing Smorgasbord, each participant will receive a “gift kit” upon entry. There are four gift kit options for participants – an Easy Jar Opener, Easy Candle Mat, Easy Drawstring Pouch or an Easy Mug Rug. A class will be offered to “walk” participants through the directions on how to make the kit they received.
Our 50th annual Sewing Smorgasbord will offer three (3) “Themed” Raffle Baskets (Sewing; Quilting; and Crafter’s Paradise including needlework and scrapbooking items). “Themed” Raffle Baskets tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00
The sewing machine raffle is a Brother, Computerized Sewing Machine model number SQ9285 Sewing and Quilting Machine with Wide Table which features 150 built-in stitches, including many beautiful decorative, satin, and quilting stitches, with 8 styles of 1-step auto-size buttonholes. Raffle tickets are $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00.
The “Fat Quarter” raffle is simple. Bring a fat quarter and you will be entered in the drawing for the “basket” of fat quarters. The winner of the sewing machine, themed raffle baskets and fat quarter raffles will be announced at the conclusion of the day. You must be present to win.
The fabric fair is a huge attraction for annual attendees. The fabric fair is an opportunity for individuals to clean out their fabric closets and sell unwanted or orphan fabric. Individuals may sell pieces of fabric 1/8th yard in length or greater by putting the fabric in a clear, self-sealing plastic bag. Enclose an index card with your name, county, fiber content (if known) and asking price. A 10% handling and processing fee will be charged to all those choosing to sell fabric in the Fabric Fair. A team of Perry County Homemakers/volunteers will sell your fabric and you get the proceeds at the end of the day.
For a nominal fee, scissor sharpening will be provided by Charles Lewis of Chuck’s Sewing Machine Repair, Zanesville. Bring your scissors, drop them off, attend classes and pick them up at the end of the day.
Doors open to the public at 8:15 a.m. Classes will begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue until 3:30 p.m. Registration fee is $10.00 (cash entry only) which is payable at the door. Participants may purchase a light lunch for a small fee or bring a brown bag lunch with them. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the day with raffle winners being announced at the end of the day.
